The most effective investigatory methods in the diagnosis of osteoarthritis include MRI scans, which are used routinely in specialist centres. These MRI scans allow cartilage defects to be accurately assessed so that targeted treatment options can be initiated.

X-ray images also continue to play an important role, as they can be generated quickly and often provide initial indications of the extent of the disease. These X-rays often show the joint line to be narrowed, for example, or there are changes (osteophytes) apparent at the edge of the joint surfaces, indicating arthritic changes.
